Migration to Cloud

Case study for Oracle ERP System Migration

The Client

Visaka Industries, a large industrial manufacturer producing corrugated cement sheets, fibre cement boards, hybrid solar roofs and manmade fibre yarn.

Operating across 8 factories in different regions employing over 2000 people Visaka distributes its products globally, has an annual production capacity in excess of 800 thousand tons of corrugated sheets per year.

Challenge

Visaka was using an on-premise Oracle e-Business Suite (EBS) requiring an ever-increasing amount of time and resources to manage as the company grew.

To maintain the efficient running of its ERP applications the catalyst for change was the need for an upgrade to the latest EBS software release. The application modules affected by this upgrade were critical to the business i.e. Financial, Purchasing, Inventory and Order Management.

A key component to the upgrade also required a service migration of both the Application Server and Database.

The challenges & benefits identified:-

  • Manage the migration and running of this new platform and database.
  • Enable better future state sizing of hardware infrastructure, ensuring appropriate capacity sizing.
  • Enhanced company financial management moving to predicted Opex model from IT Capex.

Why Sify?

  • Trust: based on both existing Visaka relationship and ‘Sify’ as a trusted advisor for cloud migration.
  • Consultative Engagement: Sify invested time with Visaka to develop a common and deep understanding of transitioning its ERP to a pubic cloud with its implications on security and IT operations.
  • Impartial Advice: With its non-bias opinion towards public cloud preference, Sify evaluated and presented the case for Oracle running on several different public cloud platforms.
  • As an Oracle Gold Partner, Sify was able to provide consultancy with on-going aftercare of Oracle support.

Solution

Cloud Assessment:

  • Oracle EBS running on AWS using its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
  • EC2 cloud infrastructure sized appropriately for client workloads with auto-scaling.

Build:

  • Project Managed with staged migration executed for both Oracle database and EBS from
  • An AIX environment to Oracle Enterprise Linux.
  • Import and Export of data delivered using a migration tool - Oracle Data Pump.
  • Delivered with an efficient Onsite-Offshore team model.

Run:

  • Visaka managed AWS environment with the aftercare of Oracle support and consultancy provided by Sify.

Benefits

  • Lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Reduction in client time, effort and resources to manage IT Systems.
  • Real cost savings achieved for non-production and development environments.
  • No end of life for the hardware or platform.
  • High availability and Recovery Time Objective. i.e. duration of time and service level within any given
ERP business process can be restored after a disaster or disruption.

Challenges Addressed

  • Achieved the efficient management of the migration and running of the target platform and database
  • Estimations eradicated by right-sizing of the hardware infrastructure. The new environment is now always scaled to requirements.
  • Company cash flow objectives met by moving to an efficient public cloud service model with a significant reduction in periodic Capex investments and operating on an optimized and predictable Opex model.
  • Potential network bandwidth issues detected early and mitigated for data backup to Cloud
  • Employed best practice for the journaling file system for Linux by deploying Ext4.
