Replace it, says one side – the SCORM-based LMS is thirty years old and the performance data has moved on. Wait, says the other – the AI-native alternative is early, unproven, and no one can show it works at scale yet.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]Neither side wins the debate because they share a false assumption: that this is a question about the system. It isn’t. To see what it’s really about, it helps to remember what the LMS was built for.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]It was built for compliance. Certification, regulatory sign-off, anything where a person has to be proven qualified before they do the work. That job needs a system of record, locked sequential navigation so nobody skips a module, completion as the measure, and an audit trail to prove it happened. The LMS did all of that well, and in regulated industries it still does. That layer isn’t going anywhere.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]The problem is that compliance didn’t stay in its lane. Its standards became the default for all learning. So, we treated completion as proof that people had learned, when all it ever proved was that they finished. We have in fact built the whole infrastructure around one kind of learning that stays fixed, and made it the model for the rest.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”8px”][vc_column_text]That infrastructure is now what makes modernizing learning – and adopting AI – so hard. Most of what people need to know at work keeps changing. A process is redesigned, a product changes, a policy is rewritten, and the course built for the old version is wrong until someone finds time to rebuild it. Learning that keeps up with the work is personalized and non-linear. An LMS works differently, it delivers set courses you build, publish and assign – so that continuous, in-the-moment kind of learning isn’t what it was designed to handle.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]The decision for L&D today isn’t which AI system to add or which one might replace the LMS. It’s recognizing that different kinds of learning have different requirements. Stable, provable, sign-off type learning belongs where it always has, in a system built to record and audit it. The knowledge that changes faster than any course cycle needs something else: built for change, and drawn from the systems where the work actually happens.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”8px”][vc_column_text]That reframes the question for an L&D leader. Not which platform, but which learning. Look at what you’re responsible for and separate what barely changes (e.g. safety regulations, certification standards, the code of conduct), from what changes constantly (how a product works this quarter, a process after a reorg, a policy rewritten last month). For most teams, the stable part is small and everything else is in motion – and that moving part is where the LMS falls short.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”8px”][vc_column_text]In some of our engagements, we take regulatory learning out of the wider L&D function entirely, so the stable part can be governed as strictly as the regulation demands, and the rest is freed from standards written for a different job.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”8px”][vc_column_text]None of that is possible without seeing your learning clearly first: what changes, what doesn’t, and where all of it lives.
